Projects
Cigarra
works in the following areas:
1. Child Care Services. At
present we have 130 children between 6 months and 5 years of age in our
Day Care Center. At the Center, where they stay approximately eight
hours a day, we provide preschool education, recreation and personal
attention, plus three meals a day and snacks. Another 30 children attend
the before and after school programs where they receive help with their
homework and one meal.

2. Community
Development. We foster strong community development, raising consciousness
of its importance, by tending to the personal and communal needs of
our residents.
We have helped defray
the costs of hoses needed to provide running and drinkable water to
the compound. In July 2003 the installation of sewage pipes in all the
streets was completed. This was a high priority project. The open sewers
were causing health and social problems.
We have built trenches
for rainwater as well as steps down the hillside, in order to control
erosion and prevent accidents caused by slipping and sliding.
We have helped with
the housing needs of five families, who lost their shanty dwellings
due to fire and, together with another non profit organization named
Servivienda, we are actively helping sixteen more families with better
housing. We have budgeted assistance for new homes for two families
per month. We also have painted all the houses. In the near future we
will build a park for the children to play in and, as another important
measure to control erosion, we plan to reforest the hillside.
We insist on group
participation in all these projects and in all community decisions,
because we want the residents to have a feeling of ownership and a sense
of pride in their work and in their surroundings. This in turn fosters
a strong community spirit.
3. Health Services.
Our first health brigade was held October 5, 2002. The children were
checked and their vaccinations were updated. Adults also had a health
checkup and we provided information on family planning. We have already
had nine health brigades and plan to offer these services quarterly.
The children also received dental work at a dental clinic, with follow-up
wherever necessary.
